The Astor Piazzolla Quintet was the most representative formation of the work of the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992), remaining active at different times between 1960 and 1971 and, later, between 1978 and 1988.
Created to perform Tango Nuevo, the group played a central role in the renewal of tango, incorporating influences from jazz and 20th century classical music. The instrumentation, consisting of bandoneón, violin, piano, electric guitar and double bass, became distinctive. The Quintet made Piazzolla's work internationally known and consolidated his legacy as a key figure in 20th century music.
