Igreja de São Francisco / Convento de Santo António

Igreja de São Francisco / Convento de Santo António

Monuments

There has been a convent here since 1463. That was the year it was founded under the patronage of the Infant Fernando, brother of king Afonso V, before being rehoused in 1502 by king Manuel I. In the church´s profile, the cylindrical buttresses tapering off into cones can be made out; a wonderful example of the Manueline-Mudejar style so common across the south of Portugal.

The convent is entered through a gothic gateway. Visible on the left-hand side there is the armillary sphere, a common Manueline symbol. Inside, the main chapel deserves particular attention with a beautiful vault with its clasps embellished with the arms of Manuel and covered in 17th century polychrome tiles. The extremely small cloisters are for that very same reason charming.

In the Chapel of St. Francis, 18th century blue and white tiles depict the saint´s life story.
