Monuments
Built at the beginning of the 16th century by the architect Cristóvão de Almeida, this church, which is now classified as a National Monument, is an excellent example of the Manueline artistic style. It has a simple structure with an extremely beautiful carved doorway, with twisted columns and typically Manueline motifs in the armillary spheres placed either side of the shield of Portugal.
Inside, where the Manueline decorative features are repeated on the capitals, visitors should make sure to admire the 16th-century marble pulpit and the Sevillian azulejos lining the walls of the chancel. Buried in one of the chapels in the apse is D. Filipa de Moura, the lady from the family that were once the city's governors.
