Portugal wins 29 awards at the World Travel Awards

At the 2015 edition of the World Travel Awards, considered the "Oscars of Tourism", Portugal won seventeen awards in European categories, thirteen in Portuguese categories and two in Mediterranean categories.

Turismo de Portugal won the award as Europe's Leading Tourist Board for the second year running. Having won this category in 2008 and 2014, this year Portugal was competing against official organisations from Athens (Athens Convention Bureau), Austria (Austrian National Tourist Office), France (French Tourist Board), Germany (German National Tourist Board), Greece (GNTO – Greek National Tourism Organisation), Spain (Instituto de Turismo de Espanha – TURESPAÑA), Italy (Italian State Tourism Board), Turkey (The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism), England (VisitEngland) and Yorkshire (Welcome To Yorkshire).

The first World Travel Awards were held in 1993, their purpose being to recognise work undertaken in the tourism industry worldwide, with a view to stimulating the competitiveness and quality of tourism. The nominees are selected from across the globe by thousands of sector professionals, who choose their favourites annually.
