Capela do Espírito Santo
Capela do Espírito Santo
Monuments
In the 16th century, at the time the Portalegre Misericórdia was founded, the Church and the Consistory were built within the city while the Hospital was established in the Largo do Rossio, incorporating the 14th century chapel belonging to the Brotherhood of the Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit).
The buildings were set around an inner patio with entrances leading off to both the Hospital and Chapel. The exterior, looking out onto Rossio, was finished in a highly scenographic Baroque style providing the building with a palatial air.
Inside, note the original gothic façade, with an external gallery prior to the entrance to the chapel. The interior is mostly Baroque due to renovation carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries with the wooden ceiling and gold-leafed carvings on the lateral and main altars worthy of close attention.
In 1974, the Misericórdia Hospital closed down and four years later it was transformed into an old persons home.
